Science 3.05: Compile and use weather data to establish a climate record and reveal any trends.
3.06: Discuss and determine the influence of geography on weather and climate:
Mountains
Sea breezes
Water bodies
ELA Common Core Standards RI.5.4.: Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic or subject area. SL.5.1.: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. SL.5.4.: Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace.
Lesson Objective:
Students will draw conclusions related to seasonal weather patterns through weather and climate data analysis.
Assessment:
Students will analyze a given table of weather data (temperatures, precipitation) for a year/s for a city and will be asked to describe the seasonal weather patterns they see and why they occur.
Tools:
SMART board or projector, globe/s, stationary light (lamp), weather data for 4 or 5 cities
Introduction:
Students will be asked to write in their science notebook what they believe to be the scientific reason for the changing of the seasons. They will share their ideas with group or partner nearby.
Procedures:
Show students portions of the United Streaming video, “The Reason for the Seasons”, pertaining to the movement of the Earth and the effects related to weather.
Teacher will do demonstration with lamp and globe to show the students the effect of the Earth’s movement—stopping at each quarter-turn to discuss seasons and weather.
Students will work in groups to analyze weather data for a given city (kept secret). Groups will use the data to make observations, generalizations and to draw conclusions about seasonal weather for this city. They will also make predictions about the city’s location on the globe (based on seasonal weather patterns).
Groups will share observations and conclusions, backed up with explanations for findings.
Students will independently complete an extended-response question replicating the group activity with a new set of weather data.
